TRANSFER OF INNOVATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES

AUTOMATED SYSTEM FOR PROTECTING PEOPLE FROM EXPLOSIONS IN UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES


Recommended application field: Potential customers: " Transport companies, subway system; " Coal mine companies; " Chemical plants and other sites which are under risk of gas/dust explosion. ¤

Advantages over analogues: Improved reliability and effectiveness of the proposed protective system can be achieved by introducing the following innovations: 1. A wireless system for detection of unauthorized explosions and activations of the protective device without an external power supply; 2. Absorber of a new design ensuring discharge of dispersed water with the droplets size 200 microns; 3. Pyrotechnic facility of a new design for quick absorber activation (activation time after detonation is maximum 15 ms).

The development stage readiness: tested in laboratory condition

Description of the development:

Rapid development of underground space, characteristic of growing urbanization, increases the need for maintaining a high level of safety in underground structures. Hazards: " Terrorist and accidental explosions in underground stations, pedestrian subways, underground highway and railway sections, and other types of underground structures; " Methane explosion in coal mines. The proposed protective system consists of: " A wireless system for detection of unauthorized explosions and activation of an absorber; " Hydraulic energy absorber. The wireless activation system consists of transmitter and receiver modules. The transmitter module contains a sensor, a microprocessor equipped with blast detection software and a transceiver, which serves to transmit an encoder signal. The receiver module has a transceiver which serves to receive a signal, a microprocessor and a fail safe decoder, which produces a starting signal for the absorber operation. The identification process involves an initiation signal which is transmitted to the activation block of the hydraulic energy absorber. The hydraulic energy absorber consists of a main pipeline and separate containers adapted to the specific geometry of the protected structures and installed at the appropriate intervals. The containers is equipped with a pyrotechnic activation block and nozzles, and, at the command of the initiation signal, will be able to produce tailored dispersing water barriers along the whole perimeter of the tunnel.
