TRANSFER OF INNOVATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES

FACILITY FOR OBTAINING FINE METAL FIBERS

Purpose of the development: Production of fine metal fibers of 20-200 micron diameter, including fibers from refractory and chemically active metals and alloys, materials in metastable microcrystalline or amorphous state. The fibers can be perspective for production of filters for filtering fluids and gases from fluidized alternate corpuscles, carriers of catalyzers, porous electrodes of chemical sources of current, heat-shielding, screening and electroconductive materials, reinforcing elements of composites, dampers of mechanical and acoustical oscillations.

Recommended application field: Mechanical Engineering

Advantages over analogues: * High productivity of the technology due to presence of many working rims on the disk; * Stability of sizes due to precise control of the feed rate of material in the melting zone and guaranteeing of the necessary level of adhesion interaction of the melt and the disk; * A broad range of applied materials due to crucibleless melting (metals and alloys, oxygen and oxygen-free compounds, composition, chemically active, refractory and hard to process materials); * Possibility to produce materials in a form of dust, needle-shaped or plate-form particles of length more than 3 mm, of continuous or measured fiber or ribbon. Compared with analogs this method offers higher productivity, stability of properties and sizes of the obtained fibers and wide range of applied materials.

The development stage readiness: Ready for application

Description of the development:
()
The operating principle of the facility is based on the method of pendant drop melt extraction (PDME). The essence of the method consists in melting the end face of a vertically positioned rod with a pendant melt drop forming. The working rim of a rotating cooled heat-receiver disk comes in contact with the drop. As a result melt solidification takes place in the zone of contact. The solidified material is carried away from the melt as fiber and under the effect of centrifugal forces is thrown away from the disk. The development is covered by patents of the Russian Federation, PCT application and application for a patent of the Republic of Korea have been issued.
