HIGHLY ACCURATE MULTIFUNCTIONAL SONARS HYDRA


Purpose of the development: High-quality 3D image of the bottom relief. Detection under water of small-size objects (cables, cracks in the underwater part of installations. A new product with good market prospects capable of replacing the traditionally used devices.

Recommended application field: The sonar is promising for use in investigation of fairways, in laying pipelines and cables, construction of underwater installations, identification and classification of other underwater objects, including small-size ones, monitoring of undersea moving objects (large sea animals, scuba divers), underwater situation monitoring in unknown waters.

Advantages over analogues: The sonar design contains a large amount of known-how. As compared with multibeam sonars Sea Beam, Sea Bat of Reson firm (the USA) the SSS with inteferometric channels provides: - angular resolution on the level of tenths of degree (with multibeam sonars it is degrees) with a simple and more reliable design featuring lower mass-dimension parameters, power consumption, cost, - a 1.5 - 2 times increase in the real measurement band (up to 6 depths), - better quality of the bottom image and high accuracy of depths measurement, - high noise immunity owing to use along with a pulse signal of a probing one with the liner-frequency modulation, - a sharp decrease in cost.

Description of the development:

HYDRA is a mobile small-size automated software-hardware complex to be operated at depths of up to 5.000 m. It can be installed in boats and ships with a large displacement. It is side-scan sonar (SSS) with interferometric channels. The measurement system is based on using the interferometer principle - measuring difference of phases of the signal reflected from each element of the bottom, whose size is determined by the resolution of the device, and subsequent calculation of the distance to it. The antenna direction diagram is perpendicular to the line of the vessel movement and has a knife-like shape with the opening angle several degrees in the horizontal plane and 40 - 50 degrees in vertical. The sonar incorporates antenna units, a unit for the signals formation and processing, the leading system (IBM PC). The employs digital methods of signals formation and processing. The sonar software enables to carry out data processing in real time mode. It performs automatic control and diagnostics of the total hydrolocation complex. The sonar has resolution by inclined range is 2 - 300 cm with maximal inclined range 50 - 15.000 m. Accuracy of the bottom relief building in the band of up to 3 depths is 1%. The sonar has a modular design: depending on tasks it can have different configurations with subsequent expansion. The antenna units can be mounted on a vessel s sides or on a towed apparatus.
