TRANSFER OF INNOVATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES

NOVEL HEAT-RESISTANT COMPOSITE MATERIALS

Purpose of the development: The materials are promising for manufacture of high-temperature and temperature-resistant products and facilities: electric heaters resistant to oxidizing medium; melting, sintering, calcining furnaces, as well as foundry and heat-treatment furnaces; tools for high-pressure treatment, cutting and mining; temperature-resistant and thermal shields.

Recommended application field: Different areas of national economy.

Advantages over analogues: As compared with high-temperature electric heaters manufactured from materials on the basis of silicon carbide, molybdenum disilicide and tantalum chromite produced in particular by a Swedish firm Kanthal, products based on the developed materials ensure a considerably higher allowable unit thermal load and resistance to thermal shocks. High-temperature creep rate of these products is one order lower and their high-temperature strength is almost two orders higher at less cost. These products do not contain toxic beryllium and radioactive thorium.

The development stage readiness: Introduced in production

Description of the development:
()
There have been developed REFSIC and REFSICOAT high-temperature and temperature resistant multiphase materials on the basis of molybdenum and tungsten silicides. The structure of the REFSIC material consists of an eutectic phase based on silicides of solid solutions and which is pierced with a skeleton of silicon carbide grains. Such a structure ensures increased high- temperature strength and heat resistance under conditions of high-temperature gas corrosion at temperatures of up to 2000°C. The alteration of volume fractions of silicon carbide, character of its binding in the skeleton, volumetric ratio of different silicide phases, fractional content of molybdenum and tungsten in them, as well as the content of doping elements (Re, Ti, Ta, Zr, Nb, Gf) allows to modify physical-mechanical properties over wide limits on the basis of specific conditions in which the material is used. The structure of REFSICOAT materials does not have a silicon carbide skeleton. The material, as a rule, is used in fabrication of protective coatings for REFSIC materials, silicon carbide and carbonic materials, refractory metals and their alloys, as well as a solder to join them. Operating temperature of the REFSICOAT material is 2000°C. Patents RF N2160780/20.12.2000 and N2178958/27.01.2002 have been obtained.
