WEAR-RESISTANT COATING FOR CUTTING TOOLS


Purpose of the development: The coatings are meant to be applied on hard-alloy and quick-cutting tools used in finishing and semifinishing treatment of billets from carbon, alloyed steels, iron and non-ferrous alloys.

Recommended application field: Different areas of national economy.

Advantages over analogues: 2–5 fold improvement of the tools resistance, depending on the application conditions; reduction of costs involved in fabrication, purchase, repair of the equipment; improvement of the technological process reliability.

Description of the development:

Work is in progress to develop wear-resistant coatings to apply on expensive cutting tools (hobbling gear-milling cutters, gearwheels, broaches, rollers to obtain splined shafts by deformation) to prolong their service life. The surface is modified due to application of coatings of different types ( cathode-ion bombardment (CIB), Balinit, ion- nitrided layers). The layers are single- and multilayered with thickness of 5–7 mcm. The trials held involved turning and milling treatment of hard-to-machine materials, including hardened steels on which conventional coatings are inefficient. The trials demonstrated increase in resistance period of 1.5–4.0 times as compared tools with no coating. Over 100 patents on compositions, techniques of coatings obtaining and useful models have been taken out.
