NEW POLYMER MATERIAL AND LOCAL INSTALLATIONS FOR AFTER-PURIFICATION AND FLUORINATION OF POTABLE WATER

Purpose of the development: Deficiency оf fluorides in potable water is a main cause of caries. In many countries this problem is being approached by centralized fluorination of tap water. Offered here is a much more economical method of potable water fluorination by a system of local installations. Fluorination installations сan be built in a potable water supply system and utilized by both individual and collective users (schools, kindergartens, medical institutions etc.) For the purpose of local fluorination of potable water a unique modified ion-exchange material "FLUORINATOR" is developed.

Recommended application field: Different industries of national economy.

Advantages over analogues: As against hydrogen-silicofluorides used for mains water fluorination "FLUORINATOR" contains calcium fluoride as a main component of Fluorite - a non-toxic natural material. It absorbs heavy metals and organic admixtures. Water-insoluble, non-toxic, non-combustible in its working form. For Russian market situation, "FLUORINATOR" based local installations would be 100 times cheaper as compared to systems of centralized fluorination of mains water. "FLUORINATOR" polymer material, changeable filter-cartridges and local installations for water fluorination are certified and have sanitary and epidemiology authorizations. Pilot production of LIFW-1 product comprising "FLUORINATOR", changeable filter-cartridges and local installations for water fluorination and after-purification of potable water was arranged in two embodiments: 1- with FCC filter-cartridge and 2 - with EFC filter-cartridge. "FLUORINATOR" is a gold medal winner of International exhibition for inventions and new products - INPEX XVI, Pittsburgh, USA, 2000; it was awarded a Diploma at CHEMEXPO 2001; and a silver medal at International exhibition "Brussels - EUREKA - 2001".

The development stage readiness: Ready for application

Description of the development:
()
"FLUORINATOR" is a modified ion-exchange material based on sulfocationite (strong-acid cation-exchange resin). "FLUORINATOR" provides for: introduction into potable water of physiologically reasonable concentrations of fluorides allowing significant variations of water temperature and acidity; fluoride conditioning of larger amounts of water (up to 10.000 volumes of water per 1 volume of the material); after-purification of potable water in regard to heavy metal ions, Fe, Al with no change of water content in terms of hardness salts. "FLUORINATOR" can be easily applied as an additional component for existing individual or collective household water purification devices or as a separate filter-cartridge of a water purification unit. Service life of the material can be increased by means of its regeneration. Based on "FLUORINATOR" two types of changeable filter-cartridges for local potable water fluorination units - FCC and EFC - can be offered. FCC changeable filter-cartridge has a cylinder body with 5° taper angle and slotted openings in upper and bottom faces with "FLUORINATOR" placed inside the cylinder. FCC can be used for fluorination and after-purification of water with lower content of mechanical impurities and colloidal Fe. It gives better after-purification of water from Fe (11), Al and ions of heavy metals. EFC changeable filter-cartridge has a cylinder body with upper and bottom face lids and with its side surface providing filtration effect. "FLUORINATOR" is placed between layers of filtering material. It is recommended for fluorination and after-purification of water with high content of mechanical impurities and colloidal Protected by Russian patents: № 2131847, 1998; № 2123978, 1998. US patent: application № 09/673,578 of 18.10.2002; patents in some 15 countries pending.
