PILOT-INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY FOR MANUFACTURING MEDICAL ARTICLES WITH NANO- AND ULTRASMALL-GRAINED STRUCTURES

Purpose of the development: Implants of a new construction and surgical tools for traumatology and orthopedics with improved consumer properties.

Recommended application field: Medicine.

Advantages over analogues: As compared with metals and alloys of common structure, materi-als treated by SPD methods have 3-4 times higher strength, a high level of plasticity and wear resistance. Surgical sets made from nanocrystalline titanium for correction and fixation of tubulous bones and spine are characterized by a complex of unique properties: high mechanical strength, low weight, full biologi-cal compatibility, and corrosion resistance. The results of testing have demonstrated that fatigue characteris-tics of fixing screws from nanostructured titanium (s-1 = 591 Mpa) are on a par by this performance with products from doped titanium alloy BT6 (s-1 = 567 Mpa). A new kind of product with improved consumer properties. The product has certain market future to substitute traditional articles.

The development stage readiness: Ready for application

Description of the development:
()
Special technological schemes of severe plastic deformation in-cluding cyclic upsetting with drawing under conditions of isothermal forging and equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) have been developed and tested. The methods allow to crush considerably the microstructure of metals by its severe deformation under conditions of high pressures ap-plied. The use of SPD methods in combination with a complex of defor-mational and thermal treatments has allowed to implement the combined technological process and obtain semifinished long pieces of titanium with industrial purity and ultrasmall-grained structure. The method is protected by patent RF N 2175685/27.07.2000.
