THE COLD TRANSFERRING OF METAL (COLD METAL TRANSFER - CMT) IN WELDING TECHNOLOGY
Purpose of the development:
The process allows welding seams without overheating root, perform soldering without causing splashing and create welds that were previously available only to a limited extent or even impossible.
Recommended application field:
Welding and brazing. Already SMT technology successfully used for surfacing riser arrays radial tubes of boilers, valves, internal surfaces, surfaces, rotors, etc.
Advantages over analogues:
Compared with standard cladding MIG / MAG, CMT process has several advantages:
- Receiving in the first layer of weld metal, which requires little or no further machining thanks measly dissolution and mixing of the base metal ;
- Increasing productivity by approximately 30 % ;
- Possibility to use for welding steels available CO2 shielding gas with virtually no spatter ;
- Reduction of the deformation due to the low heat input ;
- The ability to use all the known filler materials and shielding gases used for surfacing MIG / MAG;
- Significant energy savings ;
- Reproducibility in serial and mass production.

Description of the development:
() Process CMT (Cold metal transfer) is especially effective for joining materials with understated heat input . CMT is typical for discrete attachment heat welded joints in a " hot - cold " . SMT technology is implemented through the involvement in the process of wire feed welding process control or surfacing .
During the development of new technology and complete equipment for MIG / MAG welding in automatic or manual mode using the patented process CMT several know-how :
- The first movement of the wire is directly involved in managing the process . Digital adjustment - that's the first important difference from the traditional short arc welding ;
- The second difference lies in the transfer of welding material with virtually no growth in value of the welding current . Wire moves forward , and when a short circuit occurs , it automatically moves back . With this arc itself on burning phase gives off heat only for a very short time. Thus minimize thermal effects
( hot - cold ... and vice versa );
- Third important difference - the reverse movement of the wire support gap drops during a short circuit . Short circuit controlled and short-circuit current is kept at a low level. Result: no metal transfer of splashing . Exact separation drops ensures that after a short circuit melted almost the same amount of filler material .
Together these benefits allow to perform the work to which this can be implemented with considerably high costs : welding and brazing without causing splashing compound steel with aluminum, welding of thin-walled tubing or sheet material with a thickness of 0.3 mm, including the butt joints , for example, without backing rings etc. Besides welding and brazing with low heat input , SMT technology has one distinct advantage - it is a stable arc . That is, the welding process can be used anywhere and in any position .
To carry out the process in practice SMC had to develop new system components , to change the wire feed . Was used to design two actuators , wherein the front wire moves forward and back with a speed of 90 times per second , and the rear - is pushing the wire. Both drives controls the digital module . Front-wheel drive does not have the gear , but is equipped with a dynamic AC servo motor that provides accurate wire feed and constant clamping force .
