MULTISENSOR FIBER-OPTIC CONTROL SYSTEM OF STEAM-GAS AND WATER SOLUTIONS

Purpose of the development: The developed multi-sensory fiber-optic system can be used for monitoring of minimally invasive measurement of qualitative and quantitative composition of the steam-gas and aqueous solutions in production processes, as well as to express evaluation of the quality of odors in non-laboratory ("field") conditions.

Recommended application field: Assessment of the quality of food products, environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics (by smell), forensics, security, and special military hardware. Using the design can be extremely promising in hazardous conditions where the use of electrical sensors are contraindicated, especially in a gas pipeline.

Advantages over analogues: Designed multisensor system is analogue to the most promising developments of the world today "electronic nose" and "electronic tongue". It has high sensitivity, selectivity to the effects of certain chemical or biological reagents, resistant to aggressive media and electromagnetic radiation.

Description of the development:
()
The system of fiber optic interferometric sensors for measuring the qualitative and quantitative composition of the fluids consists of N + 1 fiber optic sensor (where N - number of detected chemical constituents) with sensing elements in the form of films deposited on the end face of the optical fiber. Every single film element is selectively sensitive to certain chemical components. The proposed system can perform two types of sensors - amplitude or interference. Principle of operation of each sensor is measuring the change of the reflection coefficient at the boundary of the fiber film (for amplitude-type), or change of the interference signal caused by a change in the refractive index and the film thickness (for interference-type) by selective reaction with one of the components of the chemical solution. Also N selectively sensitive sensor system comprises one amplitude fiber optic probe end without the chemically sensitive film element. Said sensor detects the type of amplitude change in reflectance at the boundary of the fiber end - the process, caused by a change in the refractive index of the medium due to changes in the overall chemical composition. Such a system, by unifying the individual sensors can be increased depending on the number of analyzed chemical components. Designed multisensor measurement system of qualitative and quantitative composition of the solutions during the relevant experimental design and metrological work could be introduced in series production through enterprise optoelectronic direction.
