CERAMIC FUEL CELL
Purpose of the development:
The fuel cell is an effective technology of producing electric energy from hydrocarbons.
Recommended application field:
The fuel-cell industry.
Advantages over analogues:
In the fuel cell chemical energy of the fuel gas and molecular oxygen in air is converted into electric energy directly, without intermediate transformation, whereby its number is already in 2-4 times greater than with conventional methods. The advantages of this technology is also its environmental friendliness, simplicity and modularity and versatility of the cells themselves.
The development stage readiness:
Ready for application
Description of the development:
() Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) stabilized cubic structure is the key material of the fuel cells. The presence in Ukraine deposits of zircon sand-creates all the preconditions for the development of fuel-cell industry. Zirconia powder stabilized scandium oxide and cerium, which is considered the best in the world for the manufacture of ceramic fuel cells.
Ceramic fuel cell is layered macro composite layers that perform simultaneously different and conflicting objectives. Fuel cells must be operated at a sufficiently high (> 600 ° C) temperature; one side must be blocked in a reducing atmosphere (the anode) and the second - in the oxidizing (cathode). Both electrodes must be porous (40% or more). Partition between them is an electrolyte which must be practically completely tight, to prevent direct interaction between the gases and as thin as possible (up to 10 microns) to ensure a minimum source impedance of electrical current.
Electrolytes made from the developed powder exhibit conductivity of samples of the commercial powder Praxair (USA).
