BIMETALS AND MULTILAYERED METAL COMPOSITES

Recommended application field: The application field of bimetal and multilayered composites is wide and is determined by specifications on solution of this or that technical problem. For example: - transition bimetals for fuse welding of dissimilar metals; - substitute composites for cheapening the products of expensive metals; - instrumental bimetals for production of instruments and dies; - electrotechnical bimetals for production of electrical products; - self-sharpening composites for production of cutting elements; - composites type "mokume" for making decorative articles. Application fields are actually defined by the possibility to produce materials with a package of properties and functional characteristics which cannot be possibly produced by conventional metallurgy methods. Traditional application fields of bimetals and layered composites are all branches of the engineering industry, including radioelectronic, instrument-making, machine building, rocket and space, ship-building and aviation industries.

Technical characteristic: - Number of layers in a composite: from two to thousands; - restrictions on welding of metals: any metals and alloys; - form of composites: sheets, strips and plates with thickness from 0.5 to 15 mm, width up to 100 mm, length up to 1000 mm; - bond strength of layers in a composite: higher than that of the least durable metal in the composite; - the compounds may be subjected to heat treatment, plastic deformation, mechanical treatment and other manufacturing operations.

Advantages over analogues: Advantages of bimetals and multilayered composites in comparison with conventional construction materials become evident in certain products depending on their designation, as well as on the level of functional and consumer characteristics of these products. The common distinctive feature of bimetals and multilayered composites is a unique package of properties which is achieved by combination of a variety of layers of two or more conventional metals with different composition and properties in one monolith and by specific thermal processing of composites.

The development stage readiness: Tested experimental exploitation order

Description of the development:
()
We make bimetals and multilayered metal composites using the method of vacuum hot rolling (VHR-method). This method is an effective technique of solid-phase welding of any combinations of layers of metals of different composition.
