TRANSFER OF INNOVATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES

ULTRASONIC SHOCK TREATMENT OF WELDED JOINTS


Purpose of the development: Ukrainian scientists have developed the technology and equipment that can improve the structural properties of metal with the help of ultrasound.

Recommended application field: Mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, bridge construction, transportation and other industries and the construction associated with the production and the need for the safe operation of critical welded structures working under dynamic and cyclic loading.

Advantages over analogues: - low tool weight (2.0 kg), portable, easy to use. Office's generator - 3.5 kg; - piezoceramic ultrasonic transducer with air cooling; - possibility to use in field conditions; - increases the fatigue strength of steel welds ~ 20-30% (as well as installing a magnetostrictive transducer); - significantly increases the durability cycle fatigue strength of various metals; - a low power (1 kW), along with high processing efficiency compared with conventional methods of strengthening.

Description of the development:

A method of ultrasonic impact treatment (UZUO) metal surfaces. The essence of this technology is that the operating elements - balls or rods weighing 3.5 grams - high speed (about 2,000 times per second) hit the surface of the articles. This causes deformation of the surface of the metal parts and greatly increases its density and strength. Scientists have found that in a thin surface layer of a so-called nanocrystalline structure under certain conditions. This increase endurance of materials is extremely important especially for welded structures. Because they have lower strength due to the deterioration of the structure of the metal melt in the seam zone. To this is added the external load, which causes premature fatigue failure in the connection zone. The proposed method UZUO gives the most significant among the alternatives to increase the fatigue strength of metal parts. Designed, manufactured and tested prototypes of ultrasonic equipment for UZUO metal-based piezoelectric ceramics. This equipment has been pilot production test on the basis of car-building factory. The prototypes are available for testing and demonstration. These devices have a particular operating frequency of the ultrasonic oscillations (22 kHz and 26), power (0.3-1.5 kW) and a small total weight (8.0 kg). That is, such devices allow to increase the strength of the existing designs in the field.
