Purpose of the development: To strengthen the layer of corrugated surface of knives, processing sugar beet.

Recommended application field: In industry, when making knives for sugar beet processing.

Advantages over analogues: High hardness (11500-1200 MPa) of the strengthened layer of the corrugated surface of the knife, a significant increase in the life of the knives due to the effect of self-sharpening.

The development stage readiness: Ready for application

Technical and economic effect: Experimental application of the developed technology and equipment in the industry made it possible to increase the wear resistance of knives, and hence the efficiency of the sugar production complex in 2-5 times.

Description of the development:

The development uses laser processing on the front corrugated surface of a knife of a thin hardened layer, 0.1-0.15 mm deep with a hardness of 11500-1200 MPa. In addition to high hardness, this layer has an extremely dispersed structure. The difference in the hardness of the near-surface layer and the lower layers provides, during operation, an increased wear of the softer material and thereby the effect of constant self-sharpening of the cutting edge of the knife. Considering that the longitudinal surfaces of the corrugation are subjected to laser treatment, the effect of self-sharpening is maintained until the knife is completely worn.
