INCREASE OF EFFICIENCY OF CHEMICAL-THERMAL PROCESSING BY LASER SURFACE MODIFICATION
Purpose of the development:
The Ukrainian University has developed a method for heat treatment of metal surfaces, the feature of which is discrete laser surface treatment for the purpose of increasing wear resistance and subsequent nitriding.
Recommended application field:
Heat treatment of metallic materials.
The development stage readiness:
tested in laboratory condition
Description of the development:
() Qualitative and quantitative characteristics of nitrided layers are largely determined by the pre-formed structural-phase state of the surfaces of metal products. It is established that laser surface treatment significantly affects the subsequent nitriding process. The increased solubility of nitrogen in the crystal lattice of a steel when its surface is treated with a laser beam is the result of the formation of a high density of easy-moving dislocations, a significant dispersion of the initial granular structure, an increase in the grain-boundary extension, and thus the formation of so-called "dislocation tubes" over which nitrogen can penetrate practically The entire depth of the laser exposure zone (0.1-0.5 mm) in a much shorter time.
Application of the combined process makes it possible to obtain nitrided layers with a thickness of up to 0.5 mm with a duration of nitriding of 2-3 hours, which indicates a significant efficiency of the technological combination of laser and chemical-thermal treatment methods for targeted surface engineering.
