INNOVATIVE PROJECT OF REGASIFICATION FLOATING BOARDS FOR STORAGE OF LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS (FSRB)

Purpose of the development: The Finnish company has developed an innovative project for the use of regasification floating barges for the storage and supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to remote areas.

Recommended application field: The study of the innovative project of regasification floating barges today is relevant and attractive for countries importing and exporting LNG. The use of floating barges for LNG storage will allow the delivery of large volumes of gas to where it is needed (areas not covered by pipeline transport and gas infrastructure).

Advantages over analogues: The smallest floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) has a capacity of around 120,000 m3. Small LNG carriers that could be processed into such plants do not exist. The Finnish company has developed a technical solution to this problem by creating a barge with a storage of 1,000-30,000 m3. It can also be used as a bunkering terminal, which is the universality and relevance of barges. The floating LNG station is an ideal solution for shallow areas where access for large vessels is limited. Compared with the construction of conventional coastal terminals on complex soils and in areas with undeveloped infrastructure, the barge does not require significant investments and putting it into operation requires quite a bit of time. Floating LNG storage barges (FSRB) are mobile, they can be moved along the coast or sold if necessary, which is quite appropriate in the conditions of temporary demand and uncertain market conditions. Barges are the best option for organizing quick and flexible access to gas in new production areas. Especially for places that are not suitable for the construction of LNG ground terminals, or where it is difficult to obtain the necessary permits for such construction. The barge is remotely controlled, does not require a crew and is visited only by operators for inspection and maintenance.

The development stage readiness: The working documentation is developed

Technical and economic effect: Environmental friendliness, quick commissioning, low investment compared to other land or floating installations, mobility, part-time work with a power plant, versatility of use.

Description of the development:
()
Today, the maritime industry is undergoing major changes due to toughening environmental standards, so a significant number of new vessels will operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG). This requires a new LNG vessel bunkering infrastructure, in addition to the existing infrastructure for ships using diesel fuel and heavy fuel oil (HFO). Finnish company has prepared the concept of a barge for storage LNG and regasification and its compatibility with the power plant. This innovative solution provides small and medium-sized needs for shallow areas with limited access to large vessels and lack of supplies by ground stations or pipelines designed for large consumers and impossible due to territorial features and economic inefficiency. FSRB floating barges are mobile units that can be installed and launched much faster than ground facilities. They are ideal for projects with well-defined timelines. The FSRB can provide the necessary infrastructure during the construction of a permanent ground installation. The capabilities of the LNG barge can be combined with a floating power station installed on the barge with an output of up to 250 MW. Alternatively, the barge can be used to supply gas and energy to conventional ground stations.
