Abstract. The world depends on oceans and seas as food resource, as a buffer against the effects of global warming and as new opportunities for human activity.
The debris and pollution of the marine, climate change and overexploitation of resources threaten our ability to sustainably and efficiently use oceans, seas and coasts.
Research and innovation have critical meaning for humanity to control, understand, protect, safeguard and use our oceans and seas. Rational use of their resources can create sustainable added value.
The main problems of oceans and seas today are their pollution, primarily plastic, and overfishing. This poses a threat to the life of plants and animals in the marine and coastal environment; inaction leads to an increase the economic, social and environmental problems around the world, in particular in Ukraine.
The solution of these problems is provided for by Sustainable Development Goal 14 "Conservation of marine resources" through the development and implementation of innovative technologies.
Identification of the world's promising scientific and technological research areas and existing technologies is an important and necessary stage in determining the topic of effective research and technological forecasting in Ukraine.
To determine innovative technologies for the conservation of marine resources, the Ukrainian Institute of Scientific and Technical Expertise and Information carried out: 1) the development of scientific and technological forecasting methodology using the patent landscape and intellectual property analytics; 2) the definition of the world's most promising scientific and technological areas; 3) the assessment of compliance with these areas of the subject of Ukrainian patents.
The research bases are international bases of scientific (Web of Science, Scopus) and patent (Orbit, Derwent Innovation, PatSnap etc.) publications.
Top-10 promising research areas in the marine resources thematic area are following: deep-sea mining; microplastic pollution; marine debris; autonomous underwater vehicle; pollution of the sea; monitoring of the marine environment; aquaculture production; ocean sensors; coral reef ecosystems; marine resources.
Top-10 promising technological areas in the marine resources thematic area are following: microplastic pollution; monitoring of the marine environment; marine debris; harmful algae; ocean acidification; coral reef ecosystems; deep sea mining; marine ecosystem; cyanobacterial toxins; autonomous underwater vehicle.
Comparative analysis of research results in scientific and technological areas gives grounds for the conclusion that in the marine resources thematic area the most promising technological fields in the world are: deep-sea mining; microplastic pollution; marine debris; autonomous underwater vehicle; monitoring of the marine environment; coral reef ecosystems.
